Introducing Third Space: A Podcast About Building Communities Rooted in Equity and Belonging

Today, we’re thrilled to introduce Third Space — a new podcast from Thrive & Connect Community Consulting that explores what it really takes to build communities where everyone feels connected, valued, and inspired.

Community change doesn’t just happen in meeting rooms or strategic plans. It happens in the everyday spaces where people show up for one another — where we listen, laugh, question, and connect. Third Space was created to explore those human moments and the stories behind them.

What is a “third space”?

Sociologist Ray Oldenburg originally described third spaces as the gathering places that sit between home and work — cafés, community halls, parks, libraries. But in our modern context, third spaces can be almost anywhere: a conversation circle, a workshop, an online gathering, a street corner where neighbours pause to check in.

They are the spaces where community happens.

This podcast explores how we create, nurture, and protect those spaces — especially in a world where isolation is growing and social connection is increasingly recognized as a public health necessity.

Why this podcast — and why now?

At Thrive & Connect, our work centres on strengthening the conditions where communities can grow. Over the years, we’ve witnessed the same truth again and again: meaningful change begins with relationship.

Third Space emerged from that understanding. Each episode invites listeners into conversations with community leaders, artists, public health experts, youth advocates, and everyday people who are quietly shaping more equitable, joyful, and connected communities.

These aren’t abstract policy conversations. They’re grounded, hopeful, and honest explorations of what belonging looks like in practice — and what it asks of us.
